I remember, because I am almost the same age, not the same fame, as Eduardo Galeano and Mempo Giardinelli, who in the demonstrations of the sixties we went out to shout "wall, wall, against all the soldiers who deliver the nation", among others slogans. Paredón who came from the beloved Cuba, Paredón who was synonymous with justice (with courts and defenders for criminals).
I will begin by acknowledging that I write this article with anger. Even more, with indignation, but that I am not surprised by what happened. Many times I harbored the hope that what I always expected to happen with intellectuals, was rather the product of prejudices that I dragged, from a very young age, with that kind of institution never declared as such, made up of a select group of them, that They arrogate the right to judge, and to judge through the bourgeois press, through the mass media in the power of monopolies, processes and revolutions that have radically changed, and for the better, the situation of peoples and nations .

Paredón that came from the beloved Cuba, Paredón that was synonymous with justice (with courts and defenders for criminals), justice that put an end to the sufferings of centuries of a people, popular justice that tried crimes, torture, rape, robbery of families and plunder the entire nation. Paredón that if the Revolution had not been applied would not have survived, since history has shown in many cases that mercenaries and assassins at the service of the great foreign powers do not operate for ideals but for money. They live and kill for money. They murder and steal for money. They accumulate and shamelessly show the money from their looting where death, torture, disappearances constitute their main source of income, while facilitating the way for the large transnational monopolies to loot the peoples. There is the case of Ford and Mercedes Benz in our country, where employers order the disappearance of delegated or combative workers to "normalize" production.
Giardinelli writes in his Page 12 article that he is not willing to sign a condemnation of Cuba with other intellectuals. You are not willing to sign, but you are willing to affirm. And in his article he goes much further than those who do sign, some of whom do so because they oppose the death penalty on principle. Giardinelli attacks the Revolution and demands that it adjust the course allowing "the opening of a multi-party democratic process", exactly the same thing that the American friends headed by the Bush family request. He also uses the column to indicate that he was censored in Cuba, that he was considered an "unreliable intellectual." And he says it now, joining those who sign without signing but going much further, confirming, perhaps unintentionally, that it is unreliable.
A progressive intellectual like a revolutionary cannot support his current position on what he did in the past. If you currently change your mind, feel disappointed, frustrated, deceived, it is not because of what you did and said before but because of what you say and do now. You can write the "Open Veins of Latin America" that will remain in history as the book that denounces barbarism and injustice. But those veins can also be closed. It may be that "no fly torments the conscience" of Eduardo Galeano, and perhaps that is the saddest thing, I hope it is tormented him !, because one wants Galeano on this side, also Gardinelli. The good news for the "universal superpower" is not the shootings and prisons for its mercenaries, for the criminals, never dissidents, paid by the US, which recognizes that it pays them and without a doubt, greatly regrets their losses. Reclined and trained as terrorists and murderers by also recognized terrorists and murderers in Miami and supported by a "Cuban adjustment" law that welcomes them in the US as heroes, they are rewarded, they are given nationality, money and work, while any other citizen , Mexican, Argentine or Uruguayan is expelled without regard. The good news for the superpower, for imperialism, is having managed to break, once again, the fragile mental balance of the intellectuals. I am not saying that they will follow the path of Vargas Llosa, but, honestly, I do not rule it out. I'm not saying they're positioning themselves for any Nobel Prize winners, but honestly, I'm not ruling that out either.
The most serious thing is that those intellectuals who today make use of the arrogance that even allows them to ignore laws and processes as transparent as those that Cuba applies and has every right to apply, demonstrate at the same time a superb ignorance of the Cuban reality and about they speak as if they know. And precisely about that, that they do not know, speak and write for the approval of the enemies of the revolution, who are the same enemies of our peoples of Latin America.
Cuba is not the kingdom of virtue. I know very well that country where I have been more than 25 times. Cuba lives with many problems that it faces with effort when it detects them and can solve them, not always. But Cuba today, despite being a country besieged by the largest power in the world and by its lackeys, who are not few, is not only the country that has the lowest rate of infant mortality (6 per thousand), it is not only the country that maintains the lowest unemployment rate (3%), not only is it the country that maintains a life expectancy that already reaches 77 years, it is not only a country where no child is left without education, without culture, without sports , without medical attention and without a future. Everyone knows this data, knows it and recognizes it even the enemy himself. Cuba is, at the same time, the most democratic country in the world. Of course, not with the "multiparty system" that shows us Menem, López Murphy, Rodríguez Saa, Elisa Carrió, Leopoldo Moreau or Kirchner. Not with this vile and debased, false and deceitful democracy, instrumented by a corrupt system to install corrupt men in power. So that this false democracy would no longer exist, the Revolution was made in Cuba. To ask for it to be restored, even with reworked and coated arguments, is indignity or ignorance.
In Cuba, anyone can be a candidate, they do not need to be a communist, a fidelista, or a revolutionary. It is enough that he presents himself as such and at any position. It happens that this is not the only requirement, it must meet another, and that it is mandatory: it must be voted on by the people, it must get more votes than another candidate, in secret ballot and with ballot boxes guarded by children, by pioneers, where Any foreigner can observe without being prevented. And if nobody reached 50% there is a second round with the two most voted human beings. Not with the two most voted parties because there are no parties in the Cuban elections, there are people, or if you like, there are eleven million parties, one for each inhabitant. In Cuba, elections are not mandatory and less than 99% never voted. And in the last plebiscite, 98% reaffirmed the condition of a socialist country, without anyone forcing anyone to go to vote. Didn't they find out?
That Revolution, attacked by the empire and also by those who consciously or unconsciously attack it as a spasmodic exercise, can only survive on the basis of the great internal support it possesses, the massive support of its population, its people and international solidarity. They did not make it to return to the parody of bourgeois democracy; they did it to replace the farce of that "democracy" that we know so well with a true popular democracy. Intellectuals, considered as such, because they "have" more propensity to think, should know.
